Neuralgia refers to the severe pain in the back which is due to nerve issues. Radiculopathy refers to radiating of pain to other organs. When we refer to spine problems with respect to these terms then we are basically referring to pain in lower back or neck that radiates to shoulder, hand or legs depending upon the site of pain. In most of the cases that spine specialist and surgeon Dr Sudeep Jain sees at his spine clinic in New Delhi, it is for cervical pain or pain in the lumbar spine. The most common reason for this is compression of nerve in either cervical or lumbar spine. There are various reasons for neuralgia and radiculopathy that includes conditions like herniated disc, nerve compression etc.
The common symptoms of neuralgia and radiculopathy include:
Pain in the back depending upon the affected nerve
Weakness or tingling sensation in legs or arms depending upon the nerve that is compressed
The best way to diagnose neuralgia and radiculopathy is to know the medical history of the patient. This is followed by physical examination of the patient. This is a general norm at Dr Sudeep Jain's Spine Clinic in New Delhi. Dr Jain is one spine specialist who would not advise the investigations till the time he feels need for it. The common investigations that are used to diagnose the problem are X Ray, CT Scan or MRI. In some cases an EMG test may also be advised by Dr Sudeep Jain.
Many patients with neuralgia and radiculopathy benefit with conservative management that includes anti-inflammatory medicines combined with comprehensive physiotherapy. It is observed that the best results with conservative treatment takes around 4 to 8 weeks depending upon severity of the case. In case medicines and physiotherapy does not yield desired results then the second line of treatment is the epidural injection in the nerve root. However there are cases that do not qualify for the conservative treatment. The best plan for these cases is a microscopic or endoscopic surgery to release the nerve compression. With Dr Jain you can be rest assured that the line of treatment decided would always be in the best interest of the patient.
