Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) is a type of surgery on the bones of your spine. The conventional spine surgery is done through big incision on your spine which leaves an ugly scar on the backbone. In Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery the surgeon uses very small incisions. Apart from smaller scars, this type of surgery causes less damage to the muscles and the tissues. Pain is much lesser and the recovery is much faster after the surgery.
In Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, the surgeon will make a small incision and insert a device called tubular retractor. This is a stiff, tube-shaped tool. It creates a tunnel to the problem area of the spine. It gently pushes aside the muscle and soft tissue around the area. The surgeon can then put small tools through the tunnel to work on the spine. The surgeon also uses a special operating microscope and views real-time X-ray images of the spine on C-Arm. Surgeons can use MISS for some types of spine surgery. These include lumbar discectomy, laminectomy, and spinal fusion.
Most people who have back pain will not need surgery. Dr. Sudeep Jain will give you a thorough physical examination for your spinal problems followed by appropriate diagnostic tests. Surgery becomes an option only when the conservative methods have failed to yield result. Spine surgery helps in conditions like :
Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
Spinal deformities (like scoliosis)
Spondylolysis (a defect in a part of lower vertebrae)
Removal of a tumor in the spine
Infection in the spine
If you have been advised spine surgery ask your doctor about the possibility of MISS. Not all types of spine surgery can be done with MISS. And not all hospitals or other surgery facilities are equipped for MISS.
